Hartline Throws Teammates Under The Bus

I'm a big Mike Hartline fan. I think the UK quarterback is smart and honest. But sometimes honesty can get you in trouble. On Monday Cats head coach Rich Brooks benched Hartline for the Mississippi State game in favor of freshman Randall Cobb. Instead of grinning and bearing it Hartline spoke his mind and now fans and some of the media are crucifying him for it.

Here's what Hartline said. When asked about his benching he replied, "I'm disappointed. It stinks. You don't ever expect to win the starting job and then lose it because the guys around you aren't performing the way they should. It's disappointing, but at the same time, it's best for the team. I'm a team player, and that's just the way it has to be."The part that has everyone in an uproar is "...then lose it because the guys around you aren't performing the way they should." Wow. What a way to throw your teammates under the bus Mike. If his teammates hadn't lost faith in him yet, they sure did now.

Never mind the fact what Hartline says is partially true: the Cats wide receivers have been inadequate this season. But as the "leader" of the team you have to take responsibility. Instead Hartline chooses to blame everyone else. Even if you believe what you say, you still have to have a little more tact.

Let me know what you think.

I have no idea who he is, but he probably shouldn't have dissed his teammates like that in a public forum. If he want to say that to his friends and family, he should go for it. Still, people (super-fans and the media) have a knack for making everything a bigger deal than it is. (ie: It's going to snow two flakes tomorrow -- here's where you can buy a generator and don't forget to stock up on food, in case you're stuck inside for a month!)

But in the big scheme of things, he's a kid. Give him a break. He might have screwed up a little, but he'll learn from it. And as soon as someone else messes up, the media will take their crucifixtion elsewhere.

That's the nice thing about being a "bad news story" -- it doesn't last forever. The media always moves on to the next person's faux pas.
